The first function I will cross is the manifest function where this functions reflects on the desired outcome and how actually comes to play for those the wish upon it. One prime example of this in my life is physical fitness and the details of training hard and pushing my body to limits prepares me to endure the physical stress of a Army fitness test where my strength and endurance is tested and my train up prior to gives the ability to surpass the average norms of passing and providing with the confidence of exceeding the standards with improved results from the sacrifices I took prior to. Another manifest function is in the workplace where I come in early or work later at night just to stay ahead of my workflow in turn this allows me the freedom to manuever more freely without impact of failure or major oversights. Now when applying the latent function the tables switch where the focus of something is the focus but if something else happens to help or hinder the overall outcome the function becomes a acceptable but not social norm. The example I have for that is when I had to go see the chriopractor for my back but through the process of only seeing my physical therapist all of a sudden my hamstring started to feel better. This in my opinion pinpoints a unknown achievement from a action that has not true vale on a certain current situations Response 2: Brianna 2. Structural functionalism is the theory that society is made up of a lot of moving parts that move as one and focuses on the big institutions in our everyday lives. Institutions are roles that we need for society to continue to run; this theory also focuses on different functions within those societies that we recognize and are intended, or maybe even functions that are unintended and not obvious at all until we start to think about it. These are both referred to as Manifest and Latent functions, manifest points out the original goal as latent points out either the positive/negative consequence. In my life I am going to discuss three different aspects that have both manifest and latent functions associated to each part of my everyday activities. (1)Military: Manifest functions are a steady paycheck, it is a job to make money and obtain benefits from ; Latent functions are that you will gain leadership skills, the military definitely draws recruits in with being paid twice a month, healthcare benefits, and the travel but little do they talk about the emotional growth you can obtain from being apart of an organization that is bigger than yourself and how rewarding it can be. (2)School: Gain knowledge and learn new skills, it is directly for an education and that is what school is for; Latent functions are the inequality that many people face from which institution they actually received there education from. For example, a private school diploma vs a public school diploma, and which one colleges prefer or a regional accredited vs a national accredited and which master program will accept. (3)Family: Manifest function is your primary socialization, it is where you obtain your values and morals and what means most to you; Latent functions are that you always have someone to count on and lean on when you need them the most. I am not only talking about a nuclear “traditional” family it can either be through blood, marriage, law or choice you know they will be there. Response 3: Kyle For this weeks forum post I have chosen to discuss option 2. Structural functionalism is a theory that views society as an interrelated system that aims to meet both biological and social needs of the different individuals within society. Structural functionalism is split into many functions, including manifest and latent functions and dysfunctions. Manifest functions are the intentional results of social processes while latent functions are unintentional results of social processes. Dysfunctions are disruptions to social processes that can threaten the stability of individual members within society or society as a whole. Three aspects of my life that I can tie into manifest and latent functions are my work, education, and family aspects. I work in the United States Air Force. The manifest functions of my work are to have a steady job, with educational and health benefits for both my family and I. The latent functions of my work are that I support my country in their defense and aid in the defense of my countries allies. The manifest functions of my education are to gain knowledge that I will be able to utilize to find a good job. The latent functions of my education are the opportunities that I have to meet new people and that I can participate in extracurricular activities. Some of the manifest functions of my family are the emotional support that both they and I can provide each other, reproductive functions that my wife and I have, and providing a home for each other. Some of the latent functions of my family are that I have to adhere to societal norms that are ever changing, I have to deal with aggression from strangers toward both my family and I, and I have to keep the possibility of cohabitation in mind due to my mother being less than capable of providing for herself all the time.
