Martin Luther King Jr. uses a multitude of rhetorical tools to evoke changes in segregation practices in his famous 1963 “Letter from Birmingham Jail”. Explore two, preferably, but not more than three, devices. Analyze how effective they might be in persuading a deeply divided South. Is King achieving his goals through persuasion or is he less than effective by using these tools? Explain. In terms of changing public policy, are there more recent examples you can show? Your emphasis needs to be on King’s essay and his ability to persuade rather than editorializing on current issues.
