Movie Critique Compose a leadership critique on one of the film “Contagion”. The critiques should be well written, following APA guidelines, and developing consistent, cohesive ideas over several paragraphs. This critique is somewhat different from a review. This critique is an analytical essay on a film, in which you share your observations of leadership and leadership topics and then give reasons for your opinions. Do not limit yourself to reacting to the film (“I loved it !”) and do not use generic terms like “incredible,” “wonderful,” “marvelous,” etc. Unlike a review, you assume that the reader has already seen the movie; you do not need to give an extensive plot summary; you do not need to hide plot information so as not to spoil the surprise of the viewer; and you do need to be consistently analytical and critical. Your first paragraph should include the following information: film title and year of release, list of main members of the cast. Your second paragraph should summarize the film’s plot or principal action or genre, and act as a transition to the analytical part of the essay. Analytical Portion: Focus your attention on the topics covered in the 4370 Leadership Course. How are the following elements portrayed in the film (make sure to cover a minimum of 5 topics from the list below): 1. Career Planning: Did the main characters plan to be in leadership positions? What is the back-story of those in leadership or management positions? Were they born or made? 2. Staffing: What were the main activities that needed to be accounted for? Were there enough people to do the work? Were there enough qualified people? Was training needed? 3. Diversity: Did the film recognize diversity? Were diverse opinions sought by the main characters – if so, how? Was there a lack of diversity in the film or in the storyline? 4. Ethics: Identify any ethical components to the story and how they were handled. 5. Legal: Were there any laws broken or created as part of the story? 6. Policy: Was the story helped or hindered by policy? 7. Informatics: Were there any technological element that leaders should learn from or that were central to the story? 8. Economics/Financial management: Were there any issues with distribution of scarce resources – financial or otherwise? 9. Leadership: Focus your review on whether the main elements of the film come together to portray leadership – and how this is done. Did the main characters demonstrate leadership traits or behaviors or did they develop throughout the story? 10. Organizational Structure: Were there any chain of command issues? 11. Conflict Management: How was conflict managed? What was the outcome? Conclude your critique by writing whether you enjoyed the movie or not, whether you would recommend it to others wanting to understand more about leadership and describe anything you learned about being a better leader. You are under all circumstances to make sure the opinions expressed in your film critiques are yours and not those borrowed from a printed or internet source! Plagiarism will be severely treated in this class. I encourage you to consult outside sources on the film you are critiquing, but you must use APA formatting to cite all the sources you use. Specifically, you must give a reference to your source when you 1) quote verbatim from it; in this case you must put the words quoted in quotation marks; 2) paraphrase a source (i.e., express the same idea in your own words). At the end of your essay, you must have a ‘Reference’ page in which you list all the books, articles, websites, etc. you have used to assist you in writing your critique. Every time you quote or paraphrase a statement in the body of your essay, make a reference to your source. If you have truly not used outside sources in composing your critique, then you must put the following statement at the end of your essay: “I certify that I have not used outside sources in researching and writing this essay,” and sign your names. I will not read any paper that does not have either a ‘Reference’ page or the above statement. I consider such academic honesty to be very important.
