How does race, class, ethnicity, sex and/or gender contribute to children experiencing completely different realities growing up? Think about identity politics and how expectations surrounding class, sex/gender and race/ethnicity influence the life of a child, and choose one of those social categories to compare and contrast. How is the experience of childhood different for a black boy than for a white boy, for example, even if they come from relatively similar financial and educational backgrounds? How does the life of a Mexican American girl differ from that of a boy, even in the same family? What accounts for those differences, and what are some of the long-term effects on the individuals and the society that defines them?
