Social problems are defined by individuals and groups. A social problem is defined as when society reaches a consensus that a condition that affects some members has become a problem for the entire society, not just those who are directly affected (Kornblum & Julian, 2009, p. 4). Acceptance of these definitions is based largely on the power of the definers (Popple & Leighninger, 2008, p. 126).
Instructions: For this assignment, each student will identify a social problem, research the social problem, and write an analysis paper (4-5 page paper) on the problem ( does not include cover page and reference page) The critical analysis of the social problem should address the following:
What are the different ways in which the social problem has been defined?
What are the different perspectives, theories, and or views for why the social problem exists? Explain.
What are the major social values associated to the problem? What value conflicts exist?
What individuals or groups have played a major role in defining and or influencing how the problem is defined?
What populations are affected by the social problem? Provide a description (i.e., size, defining characteristics) of the populations identified and how they are impacted by the problem.
Within the last two years, what has been societys responses (legislation passed or amended) to deal with the social problem.
What have been the intended or unintended consequences (positive or negative) of the policies in attempt to resolve, alleviate, and/or prevent the social problem.
