You are expected to conduct outside research for this and any other analysis. You are expected to avoid unsubstantiated opinions. ***I will pay the extra few for the writer to purchase the book*** FIRST: Read The Golden Compass. SECOND: Review the material in the Literary Analysis module to help guide your planning and writing. You can also take the essay to any of the TCC writing centers for feedback. With the exception of The Writing Center, you may not collaborate on this assignment. You cannot use outside analysis such as those from Shmoop, WikiSummaries, CliffNotes, SparkNotes, Course Hero, or any other online service to form your opinions or provide support/evidence in your writing. You must use at least two scholarly sources from academic Journals found in our TCC Library, and you may use credible popular media sources (newspapers, magazines, TedTalks, etc., but these sources must be credible, not sensational. See the Resources Module to learn the differences between popular media and scholarly sources.) THIRD STEP: Write a 750 – 1200 word essay (not including the Works Cited page) that analyzes The Golden Compass as either fantasy, fairy tale, coming of age, or a blend of the three. Make sure you don’t confuse genre with theme. Please be brief in summarizing the story as I am very familiar with it. You will be using examples taken from the story to support your argument as well as identifying various literary elements used (plot, character, conflict, etc.). Please cite The Golden Compass correctly, and when you use additional sources, make sure you cite them using MLA or APA format as long as you are consistent. Reminders: Italicize book titles. Include the author’s first and last name when introducing the book. Thereafter, use the author’s last name when referencing the book. Late essays will not be accepted unless there are mitigating circumstances that are documented by a credible source. Rewrites are available if the directions are followed but one or two problems interfere with an otherwise sound paper. Papers that plagiarize are not offered rewrites. Rewrites are completely at my discretion and are based on the amount of work evident in the original submission, participation in class, and evidence of time the student has spent reading class modules. Essays that plagiarize (http://web.tcc.edu/library/pubs/plagiarism.pdf) intentionally or unintentionally will receive a failing grade. Unintentional plagiarism includes mistakes/errors/forgetting different components of required documentation. Blatant plagiarism includes copying and pasting source material without appropriate citations. Collaboration is not allowed on this paper with the exception of the TCC Writing Center. Three specific types of plagiarism will receive a zero: 1) Essays that use the exact words of a source without quotation marks and citations will earn a zero 2) Essays that are missing parenthetical citations (even only one) within the text of the essay and/or are missing a work cited page will earn a zero 3) Essays in which the parenthetical citations do not match the work cited page entries will earn a zero.
