Federal, state, and local policies impact our work as social workers. It is important to understand what influences the mission, goals and objectives, services, programing, and operations of an organization where we might work or volunteer. It is also important to recognize who is served, who is not served and the barriers to service delivery faced by those who remain unserved.
Project description: You are asked to research a government, public, or private organization and provide an overview to a “fictional” community group that is unaware of this organization and the services it could provide to the community.
You will complete a 2-3 page paper, double spaced, with an additional cover page and reference page. Your paper should include the following research components for the organization you have selected:
Year the organization began
What was the impetus for its creation (what was the need and/or social problem to which it responded)
The mission statement of the organization
Identify state and/or federal policies that shape the organization
How do federal and/or state policies influence the organizations definition of its service or target population and client/consumer eligibility for services (i.e., criteria related to income, age, diverse or vulnerable populations, hiring practices
Who are the key stakeholders (who might be for it, who might be against it)
What are the funding streams that support the agency/organization? Has the agency organization been impacted by budget cuts or budget increases?
Who oversees compliance with regulations, finances, staffing, effectiveness, efficacy, documentation?
In what ways has COVID-19 impacted the organization’s operation over the past year, e.g., service delivery, staffing, finances . . .
How has this project contributed to your understanding of the role of policy as a social worker?
