Anxiety is a negative mood state characterized by bodily symptoms of physical tension and apprehension about the future, whereas fear is an immediate alarm reaction to danger (Durand et al., 2018). And panic attack is defined as an abrupt experience of intense fear or acute discomfort, accompanied by physical symptoms that usually include heart palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, and, possibly, dizziness (Durand et al., 2018). All three are intertwined together and have their share of similarities and differences. While having those, they still play a role in each other and in people and how each experiences anxiety, fear, and panic attacks.
From this, we can see that a similarity amongst the three are physical and physiological symptoms that a person may experience. Another similarity is that they are grouped because they can all be experienced simultaneously. The anxiety and fear that a person feels are normal and can be good for them. Its when it becomes severe that it turns into a panic attack. A significant difference between these three is that panic attacks are sudden and unexpectedly happen. At the same time, anxiety and fear are more of a slower process. Since panic attacks occur very suddenly, unlike anxiety and fear, they dont linger as long; they come and go. Another difference between anxiety and fear is that anxiety is based on the future, whereas fear is present. Lastly, unlike anxiety and panic attacks, fear is not considered a disorder in the DSM since it is more of an alarm reaction that goes off in the body that prepares it for the panic attack.
