One of the theoretical aspects of democratization is the indicators and measures of democracy. How do we know and assess if countries are democratic or not? How can we tell what the weakness are in a country in terms of democratization? This assignment is to practice the indicators and dimensions of democracy. There is not a recipe of complete indicators but scholars more or less agree on some indicators. In this assignment please watch the video and do the relevant readings below to learn about some indicators/measures of democracy. In light of the videos and readings please write an essay on the following question as a text entry. Your essay will be around 350 words. You can exceed this limit but please don’t pass 400 words (sorry we have large classes and need to put some limits! Thanks for understanding):
Question:
Describe some indicators (i.e. 3 or 4 indicators) of democracy and apply them to a country that you know, to analyze to what extent that country has those democratic conditions. Critically assess whether those indicators are practiced in that country or not. At the end, create a score of your own to judge the level of democracy in that country (give a score on a democracy scale). You don’t have to use some data source but you can create your own scale. Keep it simple and don’t worry. You can find the freedom house data link below if you like to inspire from that one.
