Homework #1 Social Issues in Pictures Analysis Report: Instructions: One of the interesting things about social issues is that they can be seen everywhere: especially in pictures online, magazines, books, newspapers, advertisements to the public. Your task is to first select a social issue of interest. After you select a social issue, you will then find two contrasting pictures representing the social issue that you have chosen. This essay you will compare and contrast both pictures and analyze their message about this current social issue and its relevance. Observe both images more than once. Some possible social issues that you can choose are pollution, poverty, the economics of smoking, healthcare, homelessness, education, etc. Please make sure to pick a social issue of interest as it can be a topic we are covering but does not have to be. Make sure to double-space your paper! Your report should also include the following: (A) Briefly describe the social issue that you have selected. (B) Describe in detail both images that you have selected that represent the social issue. How are they similar? How are they different? (C) Elaborate on how these pictures conform and/or fail to conform to the social issue. How was the issue addressed? Who gains, who loses? What is the message of each image to the public? What questions is the audience left asking? (D) Connect the social issue to at least three economic concepts. Some examples to use might be externalities, incentives, opportunity costs, supply/demand, etc. (E) Reflection: Which image do you feel represents the social issue most accurately? What are the strengths and weaknesses of each picture? Why did you choose this source, and what your opinion is about the message of each image. What is your take-away from both pictures about the social issue at hand? (F) Include both images in color in your write-up.
