Imagine living in a world with a non-cared for environment. An environment that is full of pollution and garbage, and that is not cared for. This essay is about the environment and how we associate with it. Also, about how much further our connection has gotten over the years with nature. This essay will also talk about how we, as humans, play our role in taking care of the environment. The poem “The World Is Too Much With us”, the book “Walden”, and the movie Wall-e, all give an idea on how connected modern society is to nature and how the environment is taken care of. The poem “The World Is Too Much With Us”, portrays an idea of the connection with mankind. Over the years, the connection between mankind and the environment has slowly faded away. The uprising of technology and other sources, has lessened the connection of the environment and humans. For example, when Wordsworth says, “Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers; Little we see in Nature that is ours;…” (Wordsworth 2 and ? “3). This explains that Modern society is so consumed in greed, money, and technology that most pay very little attention to Nature, therefore, lessening our connection with nature and the environment. With this, you can see that mankind has drifted further away from Nature, due to many reasons. The poem is well written and gives a good idea of a drifted connection with nature that modern society has gotten to today, however, does not fully support the main idea of our responsibility with the environment. When thinking about how one’s connection to Nature should be, take a look at the book “Walden”. What type of connection should there be between nature and society? There are many connections you can have with nature. You can have a super close, “living in nature” type of connection, or you can have a “breathe it in” type of connection. For example, in the book “Walden”, Thoreau says, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life,…”. In this quote, he explains how he chose to go live in nature, and live his life by essentials only. He shows how strong his connection is with nature, and believes everyone should live like this, along with the importance of connection between nature and society, comes responsibility. The responsibility of humans to care for the environment and to take up that role. The book “Walden” expresses a good idea of responsibility with the environment. It gives off different perspectives, and it even gives a personal experience. It goes in depth as to why modern society has drifted from nature and why the environment is starting to get polluted, global warming, etc.. Oftentimes, no one thinks that an animated movie meant for kids could have much of a message to the movie. However, many “little kid” movies have meaningful hidden messages, like the movie Wall-e. Due to society not taking up their role to take care of the environment, the environment continues to get pollution and garbage in the ocean, etc… An example of this is the movie, Wall-e. The garbage pile-up gets so bad to the point that the remaining humans have to move to a different planet. This shows how little effort and attention humans pay when it comes to keeping the environment cleaned up. I think that even though Wall-e is more of a kid’s movie, it still portrays a big idea of how the environment should be cared for and what could possibly happen if we didn′t. In conclusion, different perspectives come from the three sources; the poem, the book, and the movie. They all portray an idea of how the environment/nature is so important. The book, movie, and poem all show how and why nature and the environment is important and what should be done in order for the environment and mankind to be one (united) and so that the environment could last us a long time. With a different, but similar perspective on the environment, it makes it hard to choose which source fits the main idea best. Out of the three, the book “Walden” seems to fit the main idea best. Thoreau expresses himself and what he thinks in many ways and he shows that there are many ways to be one with the environment as well as how to take up our responsibility to care for the environment.
