Aim: To investigate the effect of changing surface area on the rate of reaction. Question: What is the Effect of Increasing the Surface Area of a solid – using marble chips which is the Calcium Carbonate on the rate of chemical reaction whilst keeping the Hydrochloric Acid constant? Hypothesis: The larger the surface the area the faster the rate of reaction. When there is a larger surface area, there is more of the reactant available, which makes it easier for them to react together because there are more and faster collisions being able to take place. When the surface area is doubled it will double the rate of reaction. This is because there is more surface area which creates more space for the reaction to occur. Smaller sizes of chips cause an increase in the surface area of the solid, so the rate of reaction will increase This is because more surface area of the particles will be exposed to the other reactant so there will be more frequent and successfu
