In stave one Dickens begins to portray Scrooge as a careless, lonely miser. Scrooge is described as “ a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner!” The list of adjectives emphasises scrooge’s attitude towards life and highlights how callous he is. Additionally, the noun ‘sinner’ depicts scrooge as a negative person who’s main focus is himself. This quote is in contrast to scrooge ‘leaping up from his stool’ in stave 5 to talk to Bob Cratchet. The verb ‘leaping’ shows scrooges enthusiasm and presents his change in attitude towards people compared to stave 1. Dickens intentions were to influence the Victorian England audience, focusing on the upper class, to change their ways and attitudes to evolve support the lower/working class. The readers may feel a sense of remorse towards the lower/working class, therefore following dickens’ message.
