According to our reading, the “ABC’s” of deviance are attitudes, behavior, and conditions. These all three are regarded as types of deviances because certain types of these three notions can be seen as deviant. For example, attitude refers to a belief someone may have that isn’t seen to fit the societal norm. Behavior is one physically, or not physically doing something that society would expect them to do. Conditions are seen as someone’s physical characteristics/traits that cause a negative reaction from society. These three all have their own definition, this is why all three of these can be seen as their own separate category of deviance. Sociologist can refer to physical traits, even those that are “not the person’s fault” as deviant because of the way society generally tends to act toward those with these traits. That is itself defines it as deviance. Do I believe this is fair? Absolutely not. If you are thinking technically like our textbook did, it is technically “deviant” to hold/possess these traits. Attitudes are a type of deviance because they are beliefs that lead to and cause deviant behavior. Some of these attitudes include but not limited to: serious political views, mental illness such as PTSD, or extreme religious beliefs. Behaviors can be deviant because they are explicit acts or the failure to act that leads to disapproval. Conditions are considered deviant because it can target someone based on any characteristic or trait and then judged by society. The wear and appearance of clothing, the color of a person skin and race, or even the way someone speaks are examples of condition such as language barriers and accents of people from different regions of the world. The text from the explains that sociologists claim physical conditions such as being physically disabled not being able to see, having a facial disfigurement, having leprosy, depression, dementia, and being subject to are examples of “not the person’s fault. The behavioral deviancies that “are a person’s fault” include: having a drug addiction, being an alcoholic, being homeless, and having a criminal record. Those of which were some examples. The research goes on to say that behaviors that are “considered harmful to the society and freely chosen, are those that are judged and frowned upon” (Goode, 2016) Is it fair, no it isn’t fair people who are born with physical conditions are not at fault or blame to be a deviant or susceptible to deviance, and is not to fair to be judge in the eyes of others. There are conditions that can be controlled such as the mental conditions which is mainly controlled in the form of medication, such as depression which is heavily contribution to deviance and a display of people lashing out. All three the ABCs of Deviance are classified as different types of Deviance because they all have beliefs, behavior, and traits. Although sociologist present social deviance as the deviant behaviors, the actual study should study is about deviance and the title was given for its popularity in sociology Deviant behaviors are just a section of the social deviance on the overall picture of sociology. It includes the notions, beliefs, and traits that may trigger the society. I do not agree with it because everyone is responsible for their own actions, and the way they handle things so to say that it’s not the person’s fault is an inaccurate statement.
