In an APA Style paper that is approximately three pages:
1.Introduce with some relevant background, a problem of interest (patient safety, cost, health outcome, etc.), which can be improved through a technology solution.
2.Write two “statements”:
•Problem statement (Note: this is likely more than a “statement” as you will need some background, etc.); and,
•The problem worded as a research question (study question).
For example:
•Problem: Patient throughput (time from ED admission order to placement in appropriate bed) is higher than national benchmark expectations.
•Question: Would implementation of a process change (name it) improve patient throughput?
3.Identify the theoretical model (any nursing, system, or organizational theory is ok –and you may use one that you’ve already written about) that you would use to frame a research study around the above question; -or-Identify the quality improvement methodology (any QI methodology –with the exception of the “RCA”) you would use to perform an improvement study, from the question from above.
4.And,in one to three paragraphs to discuss/justify why you’ve chosen what you have. For example, if you’ve chosen a QI methodology rather than a theoretical model…. Why? (Refer back to Notes from Instructor in the Week 6 Course materials).
5.Finally, draw or diagram it.(Note: Don’t worry if you’re not creative. Some models are very simple, and an internet search should return some excellent examples.) This diagram should be a figure and use APA figure style. The simplicity of a model/diagram allows you to demonstrate high level concepts. Try to have a little fun with this! Please research APA Style for figures.
