Your individual 4,000 word assignment seeks to take your learning further than the lectures by focusing on THREE topic areas and writing an in-depth report that describes, analyses and makes recommendations on Operations Management within an organisation. (When you decide the case and topics which you are keen to analyze and use, please discuss with me to confirm them. Then we could start into the next progress step.)
The organisation can be in private or public sectors and may be involved in manufacturing or services. The organisation may be one that you currently work in, one that you have worked in previously or a case study that you have researched from publically available resources.
The report should include the following and be written in this format:
1. Mention should be made of external forces that influence the organisation in order to provide a context for the report.
2. You need to describe, analyse and assess the key operational processes and how these operations link together to add value and meet customer / client needs. Flow charts and/or any other appropriate management tools should be used for this. When you assess the current operations management capability you need to include data and information which support your discussion and this must not be purely anecdotal in nature.
3. You need to have conclusions gained from your evidence.
4. Finally, you need a recommendations section for improving the situation within the organisation. These recommendations should include resource implications as well as perceived benefits to the organisation. A sense of timing for implementation is important for recommendations.
Key Issues:
You are on the MBA course, which is an academic degree. Although this is an opportunity to examine a ‘live case’ and apply your knowledge, you need to be able to satisfy academic criteria for the MBA.
Specifically:
• You must include relevant academic material to support the discussion – if you simply describe your organisation in such a way that it could have been written without being on the MBA the assignment will fail.
• You must apply relevant Operations Management course input to the real-life case study.
