Champion is one of the most successful merchandisers of sport clothing lines. In 1982, the University of Pittsburgh filed a lawsuit against Champion, accusing the company of failing to pay royalties for the right to sell clothing bearing the University’s name and logo. This eventually led Champion to sign licensing agreements rather than fight its own customers in court (Howard & Crompton, 2013).
