Write an Essay Based on book: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
Arnold faces insurmountable odds—everything in his life points to failure: his debilitating birth defects, his unstable and destructive family history, and a rez community decimated by rampant poverty, drug and alcohol abuse, and lack of access to good medical care, clean food and water, and proper education. As you’ve discovered this semester, the Native American experience is riddled with so much injustice, hardship and pain. Yet, in spite of it all, Arnold finds…hope. Hope! How, in the face of all that could easily destroy Arnold, does he find hope?
Write an essay which illustrates how Arnold finds hope and makes his life better. Is his belief in hope valid in the face of so much hopelessness? Who helps him in his journey of self-discovery? Who tries to hold him back? Does this book teach us a lesson about self-determinism? Ultimately, is Arnold a true hero? Why or why not?
