The opportunity to “crowd source” ideas for innovation in the open model can be very useful. This is done well on the media website YouTube. When creators post videos, they also open themselves for comments and criticism in the comment thread below the video. With that, in my experiences, the bigger, more successful YouTube channels begin to illicit a specific following. Those committed viewers then give creative feedback on which “style” of videos they prefer out of the content creator. This, when done correctly, can help a creator tailor their videos to please that following. This then, creates satisfaction within the fanbase, which creates a larger following. The ability to crowd source feedback to see what kind of content is well received can take a lot of stress out of the creative process of a content creator.
The opposite, however, could be harmful for those who have yet to develop a true following. The problem that is created by the crowd sourcing that happens in a YouTube comment section is the negative comments. If the feedback, regardless of whether or not it is warranted, is overwhelmingly negative, this would create a doubt in a content creator to continue to produce content.
The thought of YouTube content creators as companies is still a foreign conversation for many. But if you were to look at the channel Good Mythical Morning and what they are doing within the platform, you would soon see that YouTube can be a platform that houses multiple companies. Their production company, Mythical Entertainment, employees over 50 people and, throughout their subsidiaries, bring in over 100 million video views in a month (Mythical 2021).
As for a model as a whole, open innovation would not work for Nintendo. This is due to the parallels that are existent within the gaming library that Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo possess. Where it can work though is with the retro gaming library that was previously mentioned. With those games being hard to transfer to the virtual system that the online service offers, Nintendo could use open innovation to see which games would be heavily recommended to add. This can allow for some say in the process which, inadvertently, would allow for that new service that they are offering to be very successful.
