There will be two essay questions on the exam. Each should be at least a page in length. (significantly longer than the identifications.) In order to receive full credit, you must provide specific evidence to support your claims from “Holmes, Fresh Fruit: Broken Bodies”. DO NOT quote from the book. Instead, summarize Holmes claims in your own words. Students should be able to answer the following questions: 1. Holmes argues that migrant workers remain a hidden population within American society even though most Americans come into contract with the food they produce every day. What does his book reveal about migrant workers and the forces that compel them to cross the border seeking work? What similarities and differences can you draw from migrants experience and those of other marginalized groups in America after World War II? Provide specific examples from the book and lectures to support your claims. 2. Holmes uses participant observation (page 3) to guide his research, which means that he works and lives alongside the migrants he studies. But as a white man, a doctor, and a doctoral student in anthropology (he has since earned his degree), he holds many privileges that migrants workers do not have. Hes an insider/outsider of sorts. Should Holmes and folks like Holmes write about experiences of migrants and other marginalized people? Or should these stories come from the people themselves? Use specific examples from the book and lectures to support your response. 3. Holmes identifies many structural forces that shape migrants decision to cross the border to work as well as the work and living conditions they experience in the United States. Identify and explain at least three of these forces using specific examples to support your claims. Then, connect these forces to lectures. Put another way, do you see antecedents of these structural forces in the post-World War II era? Or are these specific to the present and to migrants?
