five-page paper asks you to consider the question of moral animal violence. I want you to pick a specific chapter from DeMello that covers a topic you want to consider. You will likely want to use a chapter in Part II: Using Animals. You will then use Degrazia and Irvine to further analyze this setting. Below I have given you an outline of the paragraphs/sections you will need to cover.
Paper outline:
Paragraph I: Introduce your topic by starting with a the question. For example, if you are writing about “pet” animals, you might start with “When is pet keeping moral?” Then, give a short discussion of why this question is relevant. Finish this paragraph with a clear thesis statement that indicates to the reader where the paper is going.
Paragraph II: Give a clear overview of the relevant issues as outlined by DeMello. Make clear connections to the text with citations and page numbers.
Paragraph III: Take a position on the violence in your chosen context. Drawing on Degrazia, clearly describe a philosophical “camp” and consider the violence described by DeMello from that point of view. What are the conditions when animal violence is moral?
Paragraph IV: Drawing explicitly on Irvine, put yourself in the shoes of the animals experiencing this violence. Is this simply anthropomorphism?
Paragraph V: Conclude by taking a position on the violence itself. When and where is that violence moral? Discuss any consequences your position might have for your life, and/or the lives of those nonhuman animals, moving forward.
