You may answer either of the two questions posted below, using COURSE materials and incorporating from various course resources (text, source packets, supplemental materials) to earn full credit.
a. Discuss the Indian Removal era, paying particular attention to the reasons for removal and polices used in the process. How did Native Americans respond to the removal crisis? What were the results of Indian removal, both at the time and in the historical memory of this time period? Pay specific (BUT NOT EXCLUSIVE) attention to the activities of the Cherokee.
b. Discuss the importance of westward expansion on Native American life since 1800. How did life begin to change for Indigenous people in the West from the era of Lewis and Clark to the Civil War? Pay some specific attention to California. Finally, what ideological concepts were associated with expansion, and how did they shape both American and Native American identities and life?
