Social and cultural history has been made through jazz. As a unifying social force for both blacks and whites, the genre served as a common aspect of black culture. I will explore the challenges Coltrane faced as an alienated musician setting new standards and how jazz’s freedom and spontaneity has resulted as a powerful antidote to racism in America.
