1. From a linguistic perspective, there are no “good” or “bad” varieties of a language. However, there is a social process called “language subordination” whereby some language varieties are treated as having less value than others (Lippi-Green, 2011). Describe an example of when you have seen this happen for an individual or for a group. Also, describe any implications (in school, in the community, in the workplace, etc.) for the individual or group.

2. According to Brown and Attardo (2005), “if children move to an area before the age of 9, they are able to “pick up” the local dialect, which their parents are not.” Do you think this statement is accurate for both regional dialects and social dialects? Why or why not?
