1. Introduction: Introduce the bioethics topic you will be discussing, giving a brief overview of the
historical, and scientific background. Discuss the relevant biological, technological, and/or medical
advances made in the area. Explain what types of medical problems these technologies are being
used to address, and how they might be used in the future.
2. Differing viewpoints: Next discuss the differing viewpoints/arguments raised by use of these
biotechnologies. Discuss the risks and benefits of their use or non-use, their availability to the public
(distributive justice elements, e.g. cost, rationing, etc.), and how their use can impact a patient’s quality
of life, and the life of their family.
3. Take an ethical stand: After discussing the differing perspectives regarding this topic, take an
ethical stand, and argue your ethical viewpoint. Support your argument with philosophical paradigms
(e.g. Kantian, utilitarian, virtue, feminist, egalitarian, etc.) and explain how the perspective you are
choosing addresses the four principles of bioethics—autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, and
justice.
4. Counterargument and Rebuttal: Offer a counterargument (opposing argument) to your chosen
position, with support. And then offer a rebuttal (response) to the counterargument, with support.
5. Conclusion: Write a conclusion that offers some thoughts/reflections on the topic you have
discussed.
