The first is an introduction that will lay out your thesis (the driving point of your whole essay) and main points (how you will prove your thesis). When you start a sentence with certain words like “such as” and verbs ending in -ing like “being,” “saying,” “thinking” etc, those words look for a subject that should be in the sentence before that word. Every sentence has to stand on its own grammatically without reference to a sentence that comes before it. A semicolon separates two independent clauses (they are like complete sentences) Periods go inside quotes. Spelling Wrong word. Spell check will catch incorrectly spelled words but not words that are used incorrectly. Always spell out abbreviations before you use them and then put them in parentheses right after you spell them out. Then, use the abbreviations all you want after that. Example: American Federation of Labor (AFL). He was a member of the AFL. You have everything bunched up in one big paragraph. Look it over and ask yourself if all those words are necessary to make your point. Sometimes elegance backfires and weakens your point. plurals don’t get apostrophes. Put court cases in italics Awkwardly worded. Simplify your sentences. Avoid complex phrases unless you are very skilled. No caps needed since this is not a proper noun.
