1. What is substance abuse? What is addiction? Are these terms interchangeable? Why or why not? What areas of the brain are involved in substance abuse? Can overeating and gambling be considered substance abuse or addictions? Why or why not? With these questions in mind, describe an addictive behavior, and the brain regions involved. 2. The notion of plasticity across the lifespan is a relatively new view within neuropsychology and medicine. Previously, we thought the brain only changed during critical developmental periods. These periods still exist, are still critical, and if disrupted can adversely affect development. Nonetheless, there is increasing evidence suggesting that the brain continues to grow and adapt over a lifetime – which is pretty cool! Unfortunately, such lifelong plasticity is still not well understood. But as research continues understanding will increase. Discuss the implications of an increase in understanding and knowledge to the point that the power to grow and regenerate neurons could be harnessed. Would this be a good thing? Why or why not?
