Research Paper Instructions:
The Great Unsolved Mysteries in Canadian Histories websites were developed by a team of historians to provide students with access to English (sometimes in translation) primary and secondary sources on a variety of topics that would enable them to write analytical essays. For this option, you will choose one of the following three mystery websites: The Franklin Mystery: Life and Death in the Arctic, Torture and the Truth: Angelique and the Burning of Montreal, and Nobody Knows Him: Lhatain and the Chilcotin War. When you find one that interests you, check the course MyLS website under the Research Paper tab and you will find a list of relevant questions for each mystery. Choose one of these questions and develop a formal research essay that answers it.

Indicate the question you are answering on your essay title page. As an argumentative research essay, your paper must have a thesis which, in this case, must answer the question on the front of your paper. Your introduction should familiarize the reader with the general topic area, what other historians have said about your topic, your specific research question (and its significance), and conclude with a thesis statement. The body of your paper should provide evidence to support your thesis in a systematic way. You should end your paper with a conclusion that re-states your thesis, summarizes evidence and arguments, and explains the significance of your findings. You must use a total of ten sources from the relevant Canadian mysteries website cited in Chicago Style (for full citation information, click on the about this document button at the bottom of the page on the mysteries website). That may sound like a lot, but most of the sources on the website are very short. You may also use outside sources on the topic as well, properly cited in the Chicago Style. The paper must be 8-10 double-spaced pages in length.

*** The question that must be answered: We invite you first to allow this period in the history of the judicial system of Nouvelle-France to unfold before your eyes, and then to assume the role of the judge and render your own verdict on this important chapter of Canadian history: Anglique, was she guilty or not guilty? What was her motive? Was there sufficient proof to sentence her? Was there enough of an enquiry? Was the fire accidental?
