Develop an analysis of the interpersonal communication between characters in a movie or TV show. Write a paper that uses what you have learned in class and/or read in the text to explain the nuts and bolts of the interaction. What is really going on from a communication expert’s perspective?

Your first step should be to brainstorm your favorite movies or television programs. Think of the characters in each. You want to select a meaningful relationship to write about, and this may be easier if you are able to “connect” with the characters in the scene. You may have something in common with the characters, or perhaps the relationship is experiencing a situation that you have experienced. In addition, you may find more to write about if you choose a poignant scene from the movie or program. For example, a scene with a turning point between characters may reveal many elements of interpersonal communication. Regardless of what you choose, the scene should have two characters involved in some kind of personal relationship.

Another way to approach this assignment is to think about the interpersonal communication concepts that you understand best. Then, look for a movie or television scene where the characters are encountering those concepts.

Be descriiptive as you write. Merely telling your reader what the characters say in the scene is not enough. Be sure to relate your observations to information from class lectures or the text. Cite specific areas of your textbook or class notes. Also, remember that a relationship is constructed not only through verbal conversation but also through nonverbal cues. Describe the movements of the characters as they interact and explain what these actions mean within the context of the conversation. Here is an example:

“As Michael answers, he motions with his finger in an authoritative manner. His gesture implies that Kay should submit to his power.”

Remember to write a clear introduction that introduces the scene and the characters and describes what you will address throughout the paper. (Don’t forget to tell us the name of the movie or television show!) The conclusion should summarize the information and perhaps allow you to share your own thoughts. Also, be sure to cite any references that you use.
