The World Health Organization depicts that the quality of life scale is a crucial tool that defines an individual perception of their position in life in relation to the culture, the standards, and the existing value system (1998). Burckhardt & Anderson state that the quality of life scale (QOLS) was a 15-item questionnaire used to access life aspects such as physical, interpersonal connections, self-growth, and satisfaction (2003). The quality of life self-care wheel comprises seven sections that one accesses and reflects on and gives themselves a score on a scale of 1 to 10. I have applied the quality-of-life self-care wheel as a tool to reflect and help me get some insight into the stability and diversification I have achieved through my journey of life. Additionally, the quality of life self-care wheel has enabled me to recognize my strengths and the weakness in areas that require improvement (Bloomquist et al., 2016).
After relooking at my quality of life self-care wheel, I have realized that my scores have changed. I have scored 8 for health, 8 for rest/recreation, 8 still for personal development, 6 for finances, remains a work in progress 9 for passion, 8 for career, and 7 for the environment. From the assessment, passion has been identified as my greatest strength, while finances are my weakness. Health, recreation, and career score at eight because they all go hand in hand. For health, I have managed to incorporate balanced diets in my meals, and this goes hand-in-hand with my recreational activities, which are aimed at keeping me as healthy as I can possibly be while maintaining a fit overall appearance. Similarly, my career in the health industry has achieved an 8 because I have to educate myself on human wellness, healthier eating, just making better choices by learning how to cook and prepare tasty meals. For personal development and environment, respectively, the score has changed to 8 and 7 because I haven’t accomplished all my personal goals, not yet which include becoming more aware of our environment to assist my family in enhancing better conservation methods that are clean and pure for pollution.
The score for my current levels of rest and recreation is an 8, although I have not yet achieved my target of 10. The score predicts that I can manage my career, health, personal development, finances at reduced tension and stress levels. The incorporation of ways to develop myself in all aspects of life has dramatically helped me improve my relationship with others, which has greatly enhanced my social life. The strategy for a better time management plan has allowed me to balance my career, recreation, and health. This has been achieved by setting a particular time for all the activities and strictly following the schedule. The idea or thought of ever working with people who love the beauty of nature and outdoor activities to establish environment conservation methods such as planting trees, taking care of animals is actually exciting but that would be me in another lifetime. Although I have managed to implement most of the strategies, I have not implemented the finance strategy, which was to set a budget and track all my expenses considering my income. To overcome the implementation of the finance strategy problem, I’m now writing down my expenditures putting restrictions on my wants instead of just needs and sticking to them, I have placed boundaries on buying and spending. The last result would be to consult a financial expert to learn more about finances.
Some of the newly identified strategies that would fit better are forming a group with loyal friends who we have common life goals, reviewing my progress in the self-care wheel without procrastination, and carrying out a planned and proper assessment for resources that need to be used in all the quality of life self-care wheel sections. These strategies would fit better since they involve all aspects of life, such as physical, social, spiritual, financial, and environmental, which are crucial in the quality of life self-care wheel.
In conclusion, the quality of life self-care is a tool that defines an individual’s perception of their position in life in relation to the culture, standards, and existing value system through reflection. My scores have changed due to the incorporation of healthy habits, educating myself on wellness, and environment conservations. My rest and recreational levels are up, and I hav e incorporated ways to further develop myself through setting a plan of correction for time management. The finance strategy has not yet been accomplished, I’m working on this although consulting a financial expert could be beneficial. The formation of groups, people who know more than you do, learning from them, reviewing of progress, and planning for resources could work better as strategies implemented for quality of life of self-care.
