For the purposes of your assignment, we are going to pretend that the Khan Academy has decided to add more interiors to its Smarthistory website and has asked members of the public to propose their personal favorites. You are to write a compelling 4 to 5 page proposal for an interior of your own choosing. You must select something produced by one of the civilizations we studied this semester, and which we have not seen or discussed in class.
Keep in mind: your job is to convince the public about the importance of your chosen interior. Try to consider its importance within the social, cultural, and economic milieu in which it was produced. In what ways is this interior a reflection or contradiction of some of the things that we have discussed in class? How does it respond to the values of its contemporary society (think about gender issues, class issues, aesthetic issues, etc)? What is the main value of the interior’s stylistic traits? How are design and decoration informing the layout of space? What purpose did the interior originally serve, and who was its primary audience? How did the designer(s) respond to all of these constraints? What other spaces might your interior have influenced?
This project will require research and you must footnote your sources and use quotation signs (“…”) whenever repeating someone else’s exact words (including those found on the museum online website or the museum wall label). Your class readings and class notes are a good place to start, but they will not provide enough information; so you will need to bring in other scholarly materials. Websites (including Wikipedia) are not a good place to do research. Books and scholarly journals are advised. You must have at least two books AND two articles on your bibliography, and not more than one website.
