This reading looks at the devastation of COVID-19 in maximum security prisons. The reading makes us think what violence is and how it should be treated. The world, especially Europe, does not treat its criminals the way we do. Some of the principles of rehabilitation, correctionalism, and safety could perhaps be successfully used under the extreme circumstances of a viral pandemic. What do you think? Is justice punishment or healing? What is worse, killing one man or having 20 violent offenders die in prison from the COVID-19 pandemic? Do inmates have a right to live the sentence they are given? Should we preserve their dignity, trust them, and release them to society so they don’t die in prison from the pandemic?
