Assignment Description: The Family of Orientation Project is an introspective and self-analytic paper which affords you, the student, the opportunity to think critically about the theories, concepts and skills covered in the Interpersonal Communications course and to apply those concepts to your own life. You are asked to think reflectively about your life experiences while being raised in the context of your family and the processes by which you were socialized. With each chapter that is covered, you will be asked to jot notes in response to the chapter content questions that resonate for you. As you review your journal notes, it will become apparent which topics have more relevance to the telling of your story. It is these more salient thoughts that should make the final cut of the project you submit. By the time your project is complete, the following questions will likely have been thoughtfully answered: 1. Who are you as a person? (attempt to answer holistically) 2. How has your socialization/parenting/upbringing contributed to who you are today? 3. To what extent, and in what ways, are you similar to/different from the family that socialized you? 4. What have been those critical life events (normative, traumatic, positive, or otherwise) that have helped shaped you and your current value system? 5. How has the structure of your family, its history and the nature of the relationships within it contributed to your self- identity? 6. What are the communication patterns and issues that have shaped your attitudes, values, and behaviors regarding such concepts as self-disclosure, trust, conflict resolution, etc.? 7. Given all that you know about yourself and your identity, where do you intend to go from here? What sorts of goals have you set for yourself and why? (college level writing skills)Show more
