Case Vignette

Brooke enters therapy because her brothers and sisters are adamant that she seeks treatment. Upon arrival however, Brooke tells the therapist she has no idea why she’s even there, and can’t figure out what why her siblings believe she needs help.

Brooke is a 48 year old, Caucasian woman. She resides in Los Angeles and has two children (ages 12 and 14). She is a stay at home mother, and her husband travels for work and is often not home. Brooke’s childhood is described as remarkable. “While my father would yell at us a lot, he made me who I am today.” Brooke’s mother was a work-a-holic, who was often not home and had a detached relationship from her husband. When asked more about Brooke’s dad, she mentions, “no one really liked him. He’s difficult. Yells a lot. However, he’s a wonderful father.”

When the therapist asks Brooke simple, introductory questions, Brooke doesn’t really answer her questions. Instead, she laughs quite a bit, and averts her gaze. When pressed a bit by the therapist, Brooke says, “I’m trying to tell you, I lit-er-ally don’t know why I’m here. I am so happy in my life. I have a wonderful life and don’t need help.”

As the therapist presses on, she notices that Brooke often speaks about the accolades of her children. She spends quite a bit of time describing how successful her children are, along with the success of her husband. When the therapist asks about how she is, Brooke replies, “me? I’m fine! Why wouldn’t I be?”

As the session continues, Brooke starts to talk about her friends. Brooke describes her friends as “money grubbing trophy wives but it’s their choice.” When Brooke talks about her daughter (14), Brooke says, “She’s absolutely wonderful. She has some outbursts at home where she screams and yells and locks herself in her bedroom for hours, but honestly…it’s totally fine.”

As the therapist concludes session, Brooke laughs and says, “I’m not sure I need to be here. You are absolutely wonderful and thank you so much, but like I said earlier, I am perfectly happy.”
