Writing a Concert Report

MUSI 1306 Music Appreciation

First Paragraph: identify the event.

1. When was the concert?

2. Where was the concert?

3. Name the group performing.

4. If there was a conductor, what was his/her name?

5. Were there any soloists? For example, are there any names listed after the selections like

Piano Concerto No. 3 in E Major Beethoven

Name of soloist, piano

6. How many performers were there? (If full orchestra, just say full orchestra. If a chamber ensemble name the members of the group and what instrument they played.)

7. Name the selections and their composers which were performed.

Second Paragraph, choose ONE MOVEMENT of one of the pieces on the program and write a focused discussion of the music. as follows.

Historical context

Identify the composer and musical era to which this work belongs and the genre of the work. Give one or two additional pieces of information about the work from an historical perspective. You will have to do a little research to find this. Please give credit to your source within the text of the paper.

Musical elements and your personal reaction

Comment on the musical elements. Consider form, melody, rhythm, texture, dynamics, tempos, repeated motives or themes…anything you can remember that made this selection stand out. Try to be specific about and use the terminology we’ve learned in class. Rather than saying “it was loud and fast,” you might say, “The opening was forte and vivace.” Use terms in a manner that demonstrates that you know what they mean.

Think about the kind of picture the music paints in your mind. How did the selection make you feel? What did it make you think of? Tell anything that helps to “paint a picture” of what YOU heard. (not what some website has described; this is YOUR impression) Be sure to discuss what elements of the music contributed to your personal reaction. The goal here is to write “an informed personal reaction” to the music so you are to explain the effect the music had on you and see if you can tie that to specific musical elements.

Here is a sample of the kind of paragraph I am looking for…

2 / 3

I’d like to discuss the first movement of the Concerto No. 1 in E major, Op. 8, RV 269, “La primavera” (Spring) by Antonio Vivaldi. Vivaldi composed the Spring Concerto to illustrate the feelings and images of the season after which it takes its name. Composed in 1723 for the students at the Ospedale della Pieta, it is part of a set of 4 concerti, each featuring the violin and each depicting a different season. The concerto is in 3 movements in a fast – slow – fast arrangement as is standard in the concerto genre. (Kamien, 2018: Music: An Appreciation) The first movement, marked Allegro, was indeed fast and cheerful and brought to mind images of spring with its re-emergence of growth. The high trilling violins really did remind me of the sounds of birds and I could imagine a running stream as the strings played the faster, rolling passages. Since the instrumentation was only strings and harpsichord the sound was quite homogenous and I found that comforting. The buoyant sound of the basso continuo and use of terraced dynamics (an alteration of loud and soft dynamic levels which is a Baroque style trait we learned about in class) combined to create a spirited energy in the music. The bright timbre of the string instruments (particularly the solo violin) playing in a major key sounded joyful and made me feel happy. I was still hearing musical snatches from the concerto all through the intermission that followed.

Third paragraph, give your overall general reaction to the concert.

1. How did the performance sound to you? Was the music performed well?

2. Which composition did you like best? Why? (What specifically did you like about the piece itself or the way it was performed? What musical elements affected your opinion.)

3. Which composition did you like least? Why? (What specifically did you not like about the piece itself or the way it was performed? What musical elements affected your opinion.)

Finally, consider the social context and relevance.

Answer the following questions…

1.Where was this concert held?

2. How did you access the concert? What type of device did you use? What kind of sound equipment was it filtered through? What size screen were you looking at? How did this affect your concert experience?

3 / 3

3. What role did this concert play in our community and the world at large? How did it relate to the values and concerns of those who watched?

4. For whom was this concert important?

5. What are the advantages and disadvantages of live streamed concerts? What are the advantages and disadvantages of watching pre-recorded concerts? Is this a good alternative to live in-person concerts? Can you think of a better solution to the problem of having live concerts amidst a pandemic?

7. What, if anything, would have made this concert better for you?

For others?

8. Is this type of concert experience new to you? How do you think that might influence your perceptions of what you heard and observed?

9. Could you find yourself returning to future performances of this nature?

All concert reports should be typed, no hand written reports will be accepted. Be sure your name, the words “Concert Report”, and your class name and section number appear at the top of the first page.
