Identify the artist and strategy you have chosen to write about and briefly explicate how Giunta has defined this strategy.
Briefly discuss how the context (social and political conditions) in which the artist was producing art informs how they used one of Giunta’s strategies of modernity.
Visually analyze at least one key artwork by the artist you have chosen to support your argument about how the artist’s work represents one of Giunta’s strategies of modernity.
Critically analyze how the artist’s artwork(s) addresses one or more of the issues of hybridity, gender, race, class, national identity and/or revolutionary art, and the conditions of colonialism or modernity in Latin America
If you consider that the artist is using more than one strategy simultaneously then you should address the above points in relation to a discussion of multiple strategies.
In your analysis, you may elect to introduce relevant examples of other artists’ works from Canada, including your own, as a comparative point of discussion.
PARAMETERS FOR CHOOSING AN ARTIST:
If you elect to write on one of three artists discussed by Giunta in Strategies of Modernity, you should be bringing additional and new insights to your critical analysis beyond what Giunta has discussed.
You can choose to research and write on an architect (Brazil is the most interesting site of hybrid modern architecture) rather than an artist or designer if this is a field of interest.
You may also choose to write on a popular or anonymous art movement (for example, Cusco colonial painting/ textiles/ceramics)
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
The emphasis of this assignment is on your ability to apply Giunta’s strategies of modernity to the research and critically analysis of an artist’s work. You will be assessed on the following criteria:
Explication of Giunta’s strategy (and/or strategies) of modernity in a concise and clear manner.
Demonstration of how the artist you have chosen deploys one of more of the strategies of modernity through the visual and critical analysis of their artwork(s).
