1) Classical social theory was developed by thinkers who were attentive to the social problems generated by the emergence of modern industrial capitalism. Although each social theorist had a different conception of the nature of these problems, Max Weber and Georg Simmel shared a similar concern. Making direct references to The Metropolis and Mental Life and The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism,
discuss how Weber and Simmel, each in their own way, depicted the negative effects of rationalization.
2) W.E.B. DuBois described one effect of anti-black racism as a kind of double consciousness. He characterized it as a peculiar sensation this sense of always looking at ones self through the eyes of others, of measuring ones soul by the tape of the world that looks on in amused contempt and pity (DuBois 1). Use this statement to analyze DuBois perspective on anti-black racism in America, Veblens analysis of the American labouring classes under capitalism, and Perkins Gilmans gender critique, what she called the sexuo-economic relationship in the US. In your response, be sure to draw directly from their original writings, Women and Economics, Conspicuous Consumption, and Strivings of the Negro People
