Discuss the theme of sickness (nosos) in Sophocles’ tragedy Oedipus the King, as you answer the question: Does Sophocles present a “cure” for the plague in Oedipus the King? What can heal the city of Thebes? You may want to organize your essay by thinking about who is sick, how is the sickness characterized, and what can the character(s) do to recover? In your conclusion, you might want to speculate on what Sophocles’ dramatization of sickness in the midst of the Great Plague of Athens indicates about the effect of the Great Plague on the Athenian audience’s imagination? In your essay, be sure to weave in as much information as you can about the Plague, Hippocrates, the Cult of Asclepius, the connection between theatre and medicine, etc. Remember to think about the concept of moderation (metrios) and balance (sophrosyne) that is so important in Greek medicine and life.

Please use this in the esssay as well.

“The dramatization of the Great Plague in Athens showed that the people of Athens were being punished by the gods because of the actions taken place by Opedius in his past. His quick journey to becoming king has turned out to be his downfall as we slowly begin to realize that he was never able to successful escape his prophecy. The effect of the Great Plague showed that the Athenians had nothing left to fear (the gods, the king, etc.) because they felt they were already living under a death sentence; they wouldn’t be able to enjoy their lives so, ultimately, many citizens decided to throw caution to the wind and overindulge in their desires and wants. We see Jocasta, Opedius wife/mother, say to him after hearing the news of his fathers death that “It’s best to live at random, as one can. You too-why dread marrying your mother? Many before, in dreams as well, have lain with their mothers.” (Lefkowitz, lines 980-983). The plague also encouraged religious disbelief. Many Athenians felt abandoned by the gods because the disease would strike anyone, regardless of how devote one was to the religion and this attributed to the doubt that the Athenians had in their gods.”
