The Digital Frontier
Werner Herzog’s Lo and Behold, Reveries of a Connected World (Links to an external site.)showcases series of reflective moments related to the internet’s impact on our past and present, as well as its potential effect on the future of the planet and our very species. It’s an interesting watch that incorporates a number of perspectives — some less credible than others, it seems — and it is abundantly clear that our futures will involve an even greater connection to (and dependence upon) the World Wide Web.
With that being said, Chapter 5 of our textbook, “The Cloud: Semiotics, and the New Media”, contains numerous readings related to the internet and its impact on American society. For your final essay of the term, you will compose a research essay based on one of the topics presented in this chapter. There are also a handful of articles in later chapters that also correspond to the Web, and we’ll talk about some of these options during class.
