This Part, on Durkheim, as well as Part 1 on Weber are due on Friday
December 10, 2021, at Course Materials on Blackboard
You should include at least two quotations in your answer from Durkheim
and explain each quotation in detail.
1. In “Individualism and the Intellectuals” and The Elementary Forms of
Religious Life Durkheim developed what he initially said about mechanical
solidarity in The Division of Labor in Society into a worked-out analysis of
the religious dimension of social life under the name of the elementary
forms of the religious life. Spell out his analysis.
2. In The Division of labor in Society Durkheim offers an explicit
alternative to Smith’s position on the division of labor. He believes that all
significant social phenomena have a social and ethical dimension creating
reciprocal obligations (solidarity) and that the division of labor, being a
the significant social phenomenon, has a social or ethical dimension creating
reciprocal obligations which he calls organic solidarity. Spell out
Durkheim’s understanding of organic solidarity in both its normal
(contracts) and abnormal form (in the workplace).
