Summary:
Each student will choose a topic for a term paper. Papers will be 6-8 pages in length, and will draw on documents reviewed over the course of the class. Possible topics include:
– Write a research paper on the life of one of the authors of a document studied in class (Frederick Douglas, Dorothy Day, etc.). The paper should report on the events of their life, and how those events shaped their religious experience.
– Write a research paper on the impact of a religious group (Puritans, Mormons, Muslims, etc.) or movement (Social Gospel, Abolitionist, etc.) on American history.
– Write a research paper comparing and contrasting religious experiences in a common era. The paper should identify the different groups prominent during the period, evaluating similarities and differences.
Potential paper topics must be submitted to the instructor by e-mail no later than September 7, 2020. A grade will be assigned based on the final draft, out of a possible 100 points. A grading rubric will be distributed upon topic approval.
