Rationale and Objectives
Using the same topic you’ve been working with the entire semester, you will apply your understanding of research and rhetorical strategies along with continuing to develop your critical writing and reading skills. You have spend the semester learning about your topic of interest and now will hone your skills for writing in all disciplines.
Whether you choose to complete a creative narrative or an academic paper, you will conduct a sustained research project in stages based on a focused inquiry, which will demonstrate an understanding of the topic being investigated. After this unit, you will also be able to write as well as read recursively.
You will perform as writers, readers, and editors for this piece. You will select a primary audience. The purposes of the final project are to gain an understanding of and practice in the writing skills required of a discipline of your interest.
The features of a strong, well-executed piece will include producing clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. You will develop your paper by drawing on evidence from texts, analyzing, drafting, and writing for an audience of your choice. The final product will be either a research paper that critically examines and implements scholarly texts while assisting you in understanding and applying the criteria expected in another field of study or a research-based narrative that creates an authorial truth reinforcing and/or questioning the status quo, assisting you in understanding and applying the criteria expected in creative writing. You may not use the extension for this paper.
Research Paper
Write to determine how your research supports and connects to your selected topic. Analyze and develop a knowledge of purpose and context that is based on your previously developed research question. Feel free to use any of the writing prompts we’ve used throughout the semester to generate ideas. Demonstrate the knowledge you have developed in a five-page argumentative, exemplification paper that blends at least two other additional writing patterns we’ve discussed this semester. Whether you choose to write either an academic essay or creative narrative, you must conduct and include research.
