Students will conduct research and present their findings on an example of activism related to gender and/or sexual equality. Students may choose to research an organization or an individual (including oneself).
Project will include the following components:
1) Explanation of specific issues of oppression related to gender and/or sexuality that the organization or individual seeks to remedy. This section should be approximately 250 words in length and should clearly define major terms and cite course readings.
2) Introduction to the work of the organization/individual. This section should be approximately 500 words in length and may also include visual materials, video, etc (if the activism is artistic/performative). However, visual sources should be curated by the student. In other words, students should provide a written explanation that interprets visual representations.
3) Analysis that places the activism within the broader context of social justice activism as discussed in this course. Identify the significance of the contribution that this activism makes and analyze this individual or organization’s efforts to be inclusive and avoid the common issue of privileging white, cis-gender, heterosexual individuals. This section should be 250 words in length and should engage with course materials.
