In this assignment I am asking you to “create” a fictional organization, one that addresses a global food issue. It can be a non profit or a for profit organization. We all want, I think, to make this world a better place and we all have ideas on how this can be done. I am asking you imagine what kind of organization can solve a global food issue you are passionate about. It can be anything we discussed in this class or something that was not addressed in the class material.
For example, Heifer International, a non profit organization, is donating farm animals to families in the global south. Donors can buy chickens, goats, cows, llamas to be donated to families in need. Beatrice, the girl featured in two of the videos in “The Question of Aid”section of Module 6, was able to go to school because a Heifer International donor bought a goat for her family.
There are many organizations that work to address food issues. I am asking you to search for a few of them, and based on that search to “create” a fictional organization that is meant to solve a world food issue.
How will you be graded:
Write two (2) page essay covering the following:
1. Name of your fictional organization, explain if it is a non profit, for profit or a government organization. Imagine you also have all the money you need. This assignment does not require you to prove it can cash flow.
2. What food issues does your organization address. Be very specific. Heifer International is clear in their mission. You must be too. For example, your organization cannot be addressing food security in India in general. You must explain exactly what the goal is, again be specific.
3. Create a mission statement. These type of statements are at the heart of each organization. Heifer International’s mission statement is: “We’re on a mission to end hunger and poverty in a sustainable way by supporting and investing alongside local farmers and their communities”. Mission statements are brief, can be one long sentence but they can be 2 or 3 sentences. Writing mission statements is a good skill to practice. no matter what your future job will be, I guarantee you will be involved in writing and updating mission statements, so here is your opportunity to practice.
4. Create an ethical statement for your organization. The statement should be short, no more than 2 sentences and should outline what your organization stands for (examples: protect the environment, fair labor, no child/slave labor, products ethically sourced). Your ethical statement is different than your mission statement.
5. List at least 5 organizations you have looked at for inspiration with links to websites. make sure the links work. WE DO CHECK LINKS. List these organizations under Sources at the end of the essay on a separate page.
6. Your essay is two (2) pages long, normal margins, Times New Roman, Calibri font, single space. Sources are listed on a separate page (3rd page).
7. Be creative. This should be a fun assignment but requires some thinking, so don’t leave it for the last minute.
Hint: When you research organization that work to solve food issues look for pages on their websites that are entitled: About US, or Our Work, or What We Are About or similar language. You can get a lot of inspiration from those pages.
