Week Two Assignment: Cultural Pluralism Photo Assignment and Essay Hide Assignment Information Instructions Each student will take a photograph (take or use one of your own, don’t download from the Internet) that represents ONE aspect of her or his ethnic ancestry…or if you prefer a spouse, a significant other, or a good friend. This can be a photograph of a family member, a place, an artifact, a document (such as naturalized citizen papers, visa, Green Card, original passport, etc.) Write 350-400 words about the photo. Due Week Two, Tuesday, before midnight (100 points,15% of grade).This is a formal essay and needs a cover page with your name, course number, and the assignment title. Required Parameters: Your essay needs a title; center above the body of the essay. Date and label the photograph (when taken, who and what is in it). Identify the ethnic ancestry aspect (e.g., Italian American, African American, Filipino American, Mexican American, Lakota Indian, Jewish, etc). Explain why the image is important for understanding the ethnicity. The personal voice “I” is acceptable and expected in this assignment. The Looking Glass Self (Charles Horton Cooley): In this course, the symbolic significance of the mirror is emphasized (A Different Mirror). How does the content of the photo ‘reflect’ this ethnicity? How have you incorporated that into your sense of self and identity? What kind of reflections are mirrored back to you from the society at large or particular parts of society? Use ONE of the following terms from lecture notes to explain the origin of the ancestry: voluntary immigrant, involuntary immigrant, internal colonization, or indigenous people. Explain how the term applies to the individual or individuals in the photograph. Using “Table 2 from the US Census: Persons Obtaining Legal Permanent Resident Status by Region,” identify peak periods of immigration to the USA of the identified ancestry group in the past and present. During what period did the family immigrate? (If the chosen ancestry aspect is indigenous people, identity tribal identity and whether there are still members of the family who live in a community of indigenous people (e.g., reservation, village in Hawaii or Samoa).
