Self-Control Boook: Positive Psychology by Steve Baugardner Assignment: – Self-Control Failure Submit a 1-2 page paper on the below topics. Purpose: Apply control theory to a personal case of self-control failure. Nearly everyone has experienced the frustration of trying, but failing to change a behavior, habit, feeling, or reaction (e.g., weight, smoking, feeling sorry for yourself, exercising more, procrastination, defensiveness, etc…). In short, most people have experienced failed attempts at the control and regulation of an undesirable behavior. 1. Briefly describe an example of self-control failure that you have experienced. 2. Describe your example of failed self-control according to the three factors specified by control theory that are involved in self-regulation: standards, monitoring, and strength (Chapter 8). Describe each factor and how it would explain your personal case. That is, did you lack clear standards, fail to monitor and/or not have sufficient commitment and self-discipline? Explain and give examples. How did your Christian worldview work in? 3. Based on your analysis in #2, how might you improve your self-control efforts? 4. Evaluation. Does control theory fit and help explain your personal case? Were their other factors involved that are not covered by control theory? Discuss.
