Since the 1950s, China has been under Communist rule, and the stance of communist governments on religion is that it is in direct opposition to the ideologies of communism. There were great efforts on the part of the Communist government to burn religious books and outlaw the practices of Buddhism and Daoism within China. Falun Gong is a spiritual practice that has emerged in China that combines meditation practices with philosophies that focus on truthfulness, compassion, and moral virtue. In 1999, there was a push by the government to eradicate the practice. As of 2009, human rights groups estimate that at least 2000 people have died as a result of religious persecution, and charges by practitioners of the Falun Gong that devotees are being harvested for organs.
