Adoption of ASC 842
Delta Air Lines, Inc. adopted ASC 842 on January 1, 2018. Southwest Airlines Co. adopted ASC 842 on January 1, 2019. Using the 10-K filings for the two companies during the adoption year and the year immediately prior to adoption:
1. Calculate debt-equity ratio, defined as total liabilities over total shareholders’ equity, and rate of return on assets, defined as net income (loss) over total assets, for the two years.
2. What method did the two companies use in adopting the new lease accounting standard, ASC 842? Which line items on the financial statements are affected the most by the adoption? Between the two companies, which saw bigger impacts from the adoption of ASC 842? Explain.
3. Comparing the financial statement items related to leases and the lease footnotes included in the 10-K, would you say that all information disclosed under ASC 842 would have been already available to investors under ASC 840? Why or why not? Explain.
