Eva will be paired with another individual (Jaleice) in the class. Eva will be encouraged to think broadly about culture. Race, ethnicity, and gender are of course important, but the individual might also embrace different political beliefs, belong to an age group very different from your own, come from a different socio-economic background, etc. Eva will also be asked to share your positionality paper (or parts of it) with your partner to offer some background information about yourself and learn more about their perspectives. You can decide the parts of your positionality paper that you want to share. After having conversed with your partner, write a paper about the interview in narrative form. Be sure to address each of the following questions in your paper: 1. Briefly describe your interview. a. What was the individuals identified culture/cultural group? b. How did the individual describe the values, beliefs, norms, and/or behaviors of her/his/their culture/cultural group? c. What were some of your initial thoughts/ unconscious or conscious biases of your partners positionality? d. Did the paper challenge/ affirm any of your existing stereotypes you may have had? e. Did the interview challenge any of your own assumptions or beliefs? What were they? 2. How are your values, beliefs, norms, and/or behaviors like the two individuals you interviewed? How are they different? 3. How will you apply these experiences to your social work practice? 4. How do the NASW Standards for cultural competence* inform your thinking about working with culturally diverse populations? *NASW uses the term cultural competence in their standards (2015).
