Explain why Popper prefer Socratic to Platonic thinking with respect to academics?

The 20th century produced many great philosophers and thinkers. One of the greatest was Karl Popper. His views on the nature of science vs non science is almost universally accepted. His concept of the open society is a major work in socio-politics (I consider it the foundational post progressive work!). There are a lot of summaries of Popper being published these days; this is by far the best, IMHO. Explain why Popper prefer Socratic to Platonic thinking with respect to academics? What is an open society, and what are it’s benefits? (Note that I am not interested in George Soros’ take on the Open Society but you are free to discuss it if you identify it as such, but don’t identify it as Popper’s view!). Why are we always bumbling along, but despite that, improving? Why must science be “open” to be valid? Why does Popper believe good science require an open society with a weak government?
